With FC Dallas losing to Orlando City, Portland are eight points clear in the final playoff wildcard spot in the Western Conference with only nine points left to play for.
It means that a win against Austin FC on Wednesday would guarantee the Timbers place in the postseason.
A draw may also be enough, depending on Dallas result elsewhere, though Portland then face the team from Texas in their penultimate regular-season match.
